Founded in 1884 in Saint-Imier, Switzerland, by Léon Breitling, the Breitling brand has been synonymous with high-precision timepieces, particularly in the realms of aviation, diving, and military applications. Known for its chronometers, Breitling has consistently pushed the boundaries of watchmaking, earning a reputation for accuracy, durability, and innovation.

In 1915, Breitling introduced one of the first wrist-worn chronographs, and by 1934, they had patented the two-pusher chronograph, a design still widely used today. The brand solidified its reputation in aviation with the Navitimer in 1952, a pilots watch featuring a slide rule bezel for complex flight calculations. Over the years, Breitling has also played a significant role in military, diving, and space exploration watches, with models like the Superocean and the Emergency, the latter equipped with a personal distress beacon.

Pioneering Chronographs and Aviation Timekeeping

In 1915, Breitling introduced one of the first wrist-worn chronographs, an advancement that would shape the future of tool watches. By 1934, the company revolutionised the industry by patenting the two-pusher chronograph, a design that remains the industry standard today.

However, it was in 1952 that Breitling solidified its status in aviation history with the launch of the Navitimer, a watch featuring a slide rule bezel that allowed pilots to perform essential flight calculations, such as fuel consumption, airspeed, and climb rates. The Navitimer quickly became the go-to watch for professional pilots, including members of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA).

Beyond the Skies: Diving, Space, and Survival Watches

While aviation remains at the heart of Breitling’s identity, the brand has made significant contributions to other fields:

Diving: The launch of the Superocean in 1957 marked Breitling’s entry into the world of dive watches. Designed for professional and military divers, the Superocean combined water resistance, robustness, and impeccable legibility.

Space Exploration: In 1962, Breitling became one of the first Swiss brands to enter space when astronaut Scott Carpenter wore a modified Breitling Navitimer Cosmonaute during his Mercury-Atlas 7 mission.

Survival Technology: The Breitling Emergency, first released in 1995, featured a built-in distress beacon capable of transmitting a rescue signal in life-threatening situations—an unprecedented innovation in watchmaking.

Breitling Today: Heritage Meets Modern Innovation

Breitling continues to uphold its reputation for precision, with every mechanical watch in its lineup being COSC-certified. The Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC) certification is the gold standard for accuracy, ensuring that every Breitling watch meets strict performance standards, with a daily variation of no more than -4 to +6 seconds. Unlike many luxury watch brands, Breitling has made chronometer certification a baseline requirement, reaffirming its dedication to precision.

In addition to accuracy, Breitling has taken major steps toward sustainability. The brand is committed to reducing its carbon footprint and has introduced EcoTitanium cases made from recycled aerospace-grade titanium. Breitling has also launched sustainable watch straps crafted from recycled ocean plastics under its Econyl® initiative, proving that luxury and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. Furthermore, the company has pledged to make its supply chain more transparent and ensure that materials like gold and diamonds are ethically sourced.

Under the leadership of Georges Kern, Breitling has found a balance between heritage and modernity, keeping its legacy alive while embracing cutting-edge materials, eco-conscious practices, and the highest standards of precision. Whether you’re a pilot, diver, adventurer, or watch enthusiast, Breitling remains one of the most respected Swiss watchmakers in the world.
